STMicroelectronics' STM8 is an 8-bit microcontroller series. The ST7 microprocessor architecture is enhanced in the STM8 microcontrollers. STM8 microcontrollers are extremely inexpensive for a full-featured 8-bit microcontroller.
The word '8-bit' often refers to the CPU's bit width. Thus, an 8-bit microcontroller contains an 8-bit CPU. Internal operations are performed on 8-bit values, variables are stored in 8-bit blocks, and external I/O (inputs/outputs) is accessed via 8-bit busses.
8 bit and 16 bit microcontrollers are the most common among those just starting out. The width of the data channel is the primary distinction between 8 bit and 16 bit microcontrollers. An 8 bit microcontroller, as you may have guessed, has an 8 bit data stream, whereas a 16 bit microcontroller has a 16 bit data pipe.
