Information processing utilizing any of a series of microprocessors designed to accomplish computing tasks with the simplest instructions in the least amount of time feasible is referred to as RISC. RISC is the inverse of CISC (Complex Instruction Set Computer).
Intel modified its microprocessors beginning with the Pentium Pro (P6 microarchitecture) and employed an internal RISC core behind the original CISC instructions. Since the Pentium Pro, all CISC instructions have been broken down into smaller chunks (oops) and then performed by the RISC core.
The Intel i7-7700K CPU, for example, has a base frequency of 4.2 GHz – that's more than four billion clock cycles per second. x86 processors are built on the complex instruction set computer (CISC) architecture, which allows operations to be completed in the fewest "assembly lines"—any low-level programming language.
