What does MEMS sensor measure?

MEMS, or Micro Electro-Mechanical System, is a chip-based technology in which sensors are made up of a suspended mass sandwiched between two capacitive plates. This suspended material causes an electrical potential difference when the sensor is tilted. The generated differential is then measured as a capacitance change.

What are MEMS accelerometer used for?

MEMS accelerometers are used wherever there is a need to measure linear motion, either movement, shock or vibration but without a fixed reference. They measure the linear acceleration of whatever they are attached to.

A MEMS sensor delivers the same useful characteristics as any other sensor line, but you don't have to worry about space limits. MEMS employs extremely small micromachine components, with each sensor fitting into the palm of your hand.
