A rail-to-rail input (RRI) amplifier is defined by its input common-mode voltage range, which includes both the positive and negative supply rails. The input common-mode voltage (VCM) is the most important factor when deciding whether or not an RRI amplifier is required for a given circuit.
A single-supply op amp is specifically designed to have a common-mode range which extends all the way to the negative supply (ground). Also, its output stage is usu- ally designed to swing close to ground.
An operational amplifier (op amp) is an analog circuit block that takes a differential voltage input and produces a single-ended voltage output. Op amps usually have three terminals: two high-impedance inputs and a low-impedance output port.
