The RGMII interface is a dual data rate (DDR) interface with a transmit line from the FPGA to the PHY and a receive path from the PHY to the FPGA. Both pathways have their own clock, four data signals, and a control signal. The RGMII standard requires that data and clock be output at the same time.
Gigabit Ethernet may not speed up your Internet. If your Internet connection is less than 100 megabits, a gigabit router like this one is a waste of money. However, if your Internet connection is quicker than 100 megabits per second, you will require gigabit Ethernet to take full benefit of it.
An Ethernet PHY is intended to offer error-free transmission over a variety of media to distances greater than 100 meters. A media access controller is linked to the Ethernet PHY (MAC). The MAC is typically built into a processor, FPGA, or ASIC and controls the data-link layer of the OSI model.
