What is a DIAC used for?

The DIAC is an electronics component that is widely used to assist even triggering of a TRIAC when used in AC switches and as a result they are often found in light dimmers such as those used in domestic lighting. These electronic components are also widely used in starter circuits for fluorescent lamps.

How is DIAC different from of thyristor?

DIAC belongs to the Thyristor family. It is a power semiconductor device that lets the current pass through it in both directions i.e., it is a bilateral component. Thus, DIAC can be switched from OFF state to ON state for both polarities of applied voltage. That is why it is used in AC switching.

What are thyristors SCR TRIAC and DIAC?

Thyristors, Triacs and Diacs Symbols. SCR stands for silicon controlled rectifier are a 4 layered PNPN semiconductor device. It has three terminals Anode, Cathode & Gate. Just like a diode, It is a unidirectional device but with a gate control input for triggering the SCR.
