Static-RAM technology based on CMOS is capable of parallel optical access, with reading/write rates restricted by native RAM access times. Based on the hybrid integration of GaAs-AlGaAs MQW modulators over CMOS, we created a 2/spl times/2 mm optoelectronic-VLSI test chip with 800-b storage and 200 optical I/O.
SRAM is widely used for cache memory in computers, such as a processor's L2 or L3 cache. Because of its cost and size, it is not utilized for primary memory in computers. DRAM is used in most computers instead because it allows for higher densities at a lower cost per megabyte (MB).
The actual hardware utilized for cache memory is known as high-speed static random access memory (SRAM). The hardware utilized in a computer's primary memory is known as dynamic random access memory (DRAM).
