How many types of motor drivers are there?

There are three general categories of electric drives: DC motor drives, eddy current drives and AC motor drives.

What is the function motor driver?

Motor drivers acts as an interface between the motors and the control circuits. Motor require high amount of current whereas the controller circuit works on low current signals. So the function of motor drivers is to take a low-current control signal and then turn it into a higher-current signal that can drive a motor.

Why is a motor driver used in running a DC motor?

Without control of the DC motor torque/current, the motor is allowed to pull large currents that can often result in torques delivered in excess of what is mechanically viable for the system, leading to imminent failure (especially when gear with a large reduction ratio is used).
