What is the purpose of a charge controller?

A battery charge controller (BCC) regulates the flow of electricity from the PV generator to the battery. Its function is to regulate the voltage and current from the PV array in order to prevent overcharging and also overdischarging of the battery.

What is the difference between a charge controller and an inverter?

Solar systems need inverters to convert the voltage from DC to AC. By contrast, charge controllers are only needed on solar systems with batteries, in both grid-tied and off-grid applications.

Does the charge controller stop charging when battery is full?

Overcharging batteries will at the least significantly reduce battery life and at worst damage the batteries to the point that they are unusable. The most basic charge controller simply monitors the battery voltage and opens the circuit, stopping the charging, when the battery voltage rises to a certain level.
